A trip in the footsteps of John Paul II

John Paul II – one of the greatest and most important figures in the 20th century.

Wadowice tour

"In Wadowice everything started..." John Paul II

The tour begins with a visit to Wadowice, the hometown of Karol Wojtyła, later to become Pope John Paul II. He was born in Wadowice, where he also spent his school years.

The family home of Pope John Paul II

The museum is located in the Wadowice main market. In the former family house of Karol Wojtyła, the museum of John Paul II has been opened to the public since 9th April 2014.

The exhibition tells the story of a man who grew up in a small town in Poland. The museum commemorates Wojtyła's life and his work in Poland until he left Krakow for the Vatican in 1978.

The heart of the Museum is the flat rented by the future Pope's parents since 1919. Wojtyła's family rented two rooms with a kitchen on the first floor. Wojtyła was born in this apartment on 18 May 1920. Wojtyła lived in this house until 1938 when he moved with his father to Krakow and enrolled at Jagiellonian University.

The museum, annually visited by about 250 thousand people from all over the world.

The Virgin Mary's Offertory Minor Basilica

The first mention of an independent parish in Wadowice dates from 1470. After a fire in the 18th century, the church was expanded. At the end of the 19th century, the basilica received its present facade and towers. In 1992, by papal bull, the church was promoted to the rank of Minor Basilica. In this church, Karol Wojtyła received his First Communion and the sacrament of confirmation. In 1946, Father Karol Wojtyła celebrated his first mass here.

John Paul II Statue in front of the Minor Basilica

On 16 June 2006, on the sixth anniversary of John Paul II's last pilgrimage to Wadowice, a statue of the Pope was placed on the rock. The statue stands on a granite rock that was moved by prehistoric glaciers from the mountains of Scandinavia.

The Market Square - John Paul II Square

Between 2010-2013, the city revitalized the market square. A new granite pavement was put in. On the flagstones of the square, 161 tablets commemorating the pilgrimages of John Paul II were installed.

When visiting Wadowice, you can try the Papal cream cakes.

Monastery in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska

Only 35 km away from Krakow, over the hills and the green valleys, in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, stands a monastery of the Bernardines. It is one of the most important centers of pilgrimage in Poland. Kalwaria is part of one of Europe's most interesting landscapes and architectural projects. Already Karol Wojtyła came here as a little boy with his father. The Sanctuary of Kalwaria was a place of prayer for John Paul II - according to his wishes:

"(...) And do pray for me here, during my life and after my death. (...)" (Kalwaria, 7 VI 1979).

Sanctuary of the Passion and of the Madonna in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska is entered on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The Sanctuary of Divine Mercy in Krakow - Lagiewniki

The Sanctuary is situated in the buildings of the monastery of the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy in Krakow. Very dynamic expansion of worship of the Divine Mercy was launched by the beatification of Sister Faustina (1993) and her canonization (2000), and also thanks to pilgrimages of John Paul II to Lagiewniki (1997 and 2002). It caused the extension of the Sanctuary and building of a new church, which was consecrated by Pope John Paul II in 2002. In this place, the Pope solemnly entrusted the world to the Divine Mercy. Adjacent to the basilica is a 76-meter viewing tower.

"Be Not Afraid" John Paul II Center in Krakow

The "Be Not Afraid" John Paul II Center was established by Cardinal Dziwisz on January 2, 2006, in response to the words of John Paul II:

"(...) Be not afraid! Open wide the doors for Christ! (...)" (22.10.1978)

ZAKOPANE

Visit the winter capital of Poland!

About Zakopane

Zakopane is located in the south of Poland, about 100 km south of Krakow.

Zakopane is a charming town situated at the foot of the majestic Tatra Mountains and is one of the most famous tourist destinations in Poland. In the interwar years, the development of ski tourism led to the town becoming the winter capital of Poland. During this period, the town twice hosted the FIS world skiing championship.

Zakopane is a place where you never get bored. In the winter the Tatra Mountains become the centre of winter sports activity in Poland. This is the place to go skiing and snowboarding.

It is also the capital of Polish Highland culture.

The mountain traditions cultivated here can be seen in the folk costumes and the unique wooden architecture of the houses.

The popularity of Zakopane flourished thanks to Stanisław Witkiewicz, a painter and architect who lived there from 1890. Fascinated with the architecture and decorative motifs of the highland people, he used them as the foundation upon which he created an innovative and unique style, now known as the Zakopane style.

In both summer and winter, the town offers a lot of opportunities for active leisure and relaxation.

  • Zakopane is located about 100 km south of Krakow. It is reached by the Zakopianka (route E77), which is generally very busy on weekends and holidays because anyone who can get to Zakopane from Krakow (or other Polish cities) uses this road. Some parts of this road may cause problems. The journey may take more time because of construction.

  • The temperatures in the mountains are lower than in other regions.

  • We may alter the order of the day depending on traffic, weather, or special events in order to maximize your enjoyment of the day.
